Fitness Center

Quick, do you know the #1 cause of death among firefighters?
Fire you say? Nope. It’s heart attacks, or as we say… sudden cardiac death (e.g., myocardial infarction or arrhythmia).*
That’s right, the leading cause of death among our ranks is something that research has shown can be decreased by exercise and diet. So in 2005 Upper Mountain sought a grant to create an in-house workout facility for members. The rest as they say is history.

Take one look at our workout room today and you’ll see why it’s the crown jewel of our station. Open to all members on a 24/7 basis we believe this is better than any gym you could ever pay to belong to. Let it never be said that at UMT we don’t take exercise seriously.

*About the study
The findings in a CDC 1994-2004 report indicated that 610 volunteer and 368 career firefighters died while on duty during 1994–2004 and that heart attacks were the leading cause of fatality for both volunteer and career firefighters. Firefighting is physically demanding work requiring high levels of aerobic capacity. Therefore, fire departments were encouraged to require preplacement and annual medical evaluations in accordance with NFPA guidelines. NFPA 1582, Standards on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments, recommends exercise stress testing for asymptomatic firefighters who have two or more risk factors for CAD. Both volunteer and career firefighter organizations have developed fitness and wellness programs to prevent atherosclerotic heart disease. NFPA 1583, Standard on Health-Related Fitness Programs for Firefighters, outlines a complete health-related fitness program designed for fire departments.
