History

Before 1957, there was no New York Power Authority Niagara Power Project, and before 1959, there was no Upper Mountain Fire Company.  The relationship between Upper Mountain and the New York Power Authority dates back to the inception of the fire company, which was created out of necessity for the residents of the Escarpment Area of Lewiston due to the creation of the NYPA Reservoir.  Prior to 1959, Upper Mountain's current district was divided between the Lewiston Fire Company #1 and Lewiston Fire Company #2 districts.  The residential area of Upper Mountain's current district, the Escarpment Area, was protected by the Lewiston Fire Company #2, and the founding members of the Upper Mountain Fire Company were originally members of the Lewiston Fire Company #2.  In fact, during the two years between the construction of the NYPA Reservoir and the establishment of the Upper Mountain Fire Company, Upper Mountain served as a substation to Lewiston #2.
